Upcoming Events
The ODU Philosophy Club is off to a great start! Our leadership team, the executive board, has accomplished much in the past month, and we have scheduled some interesting activities for you in the next month-- all just to build momentum. In the near future, we hope to work with members to determine topics for lectures and debates as well as learn from you about your interests, so please give us feedback at every opportunity. The ODU Philosophy Club is your club, but we need your involvement (mind and body) to turn your hopes for it into a reality.
Before I introduce upcoming events, I must thank the board for the time they have spent to ensure the successful launch of the club. Vice Presidents Cynthia Pereira and Maxwell Schrumpf have completed administrative tasks and attended meetings, Curtis Long has provided strong administrative support as our club scribe, Aly Croft has committed herself to mastering the techné of club finances as treasurer, Joshua Fitzwater has contributed his talents in photography and graphic design as Club Historian, Sean Whitty created, designed, and manages this blog, and Zach Breidenbach has committed himself to the rewarding task of community service. Each plays a crucial role towards the ultimate success of our club, and I am honored to work with them and so grateful for their contributions. Leaders are hard to come by. I know because I am still looking for more to get actively involved with club decisions and events. Am I looking for you? Please consider sharing your talents with the club (email me your ideas as to how you may contribute).
How can you get involved? Attend an upcoming meeting or activity. Within the next month, we have two opportunities that we hope you'll take advantage of, Open Mic! and Movie & Discussion. Our first general "meeting" and Open Mic! is scheduled for next Tuesday evening (January 25th) at 7:30 p.m. at Borjo Coffeehouse, just across from the campus bookstore. Open Mic! will be held the 4th Tuesday monthly. If you're unable to make it in the evenings, come to Movie & Discussion, the first of which will be February 11th, in the Burgess Room (9024) in BAL. Movie & Discussion will be held at 12:00 p.m. on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. We hope you'll attend these preliminary events, so that we may hear more from you about your ideas for the club.
As Dr. Loomis likes to say, "the unexamined life is not worth living." Come on out, and help me figure out what on Earth he is talking about!

Old Dominion University Philosophy Club First Meeting
Blog posted by Joshua Fitzwater -club historian-
The first meeting of the new Old Dominion University Philosophy Club was held on January 11th at 12:15pm on the 9th floor of the BAL building.
Facilitated by club president Halie Hovenga, many initial administrative tasks were first discussed in reference to getting the new club officially up and running.
Upon the completion of these discussed administrative tasks, three major activities were proposed and discussed as possible happenings for the club. First, a general concensus emerged that some version of a philosophy open mic discussion should be reinstated as a monthly or bi monthly club happening. Faculty Advisory Dr. Hatab specifically seemed to see this as a rewarding and fun activity that garnered much popularity in a philosophy slam installment with the old ODU philosophy club of yesteryear.
The second proposed activity discussion, specifically the acquisition of either ODU faculty or outside entities to lecture on specific philosophy subjects/themes/topics, was led by club vice president Max Schrumpf. Members seemed to profess an interest in said activity. The specifics of what philosophic subjects to have lectured would be proposed by and voted on by the members of the club.
Finally, getting the word out of the clubs inception and in reference to recruiting new members was stressed as most important. A blog (that which you see here) http://www.oduphilosophyclub.blogspot.com/ along with a facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Old-Dominion-Philosophy-Club/152290531489164 have thus far been created to help recruit new members and encourage club growth.
